The Fundamentals (Read Before Anything Else)

How Karma Works (2026 Edition)

Three types that matter: Comment karma (upvotes on your comments), Post karma (upvotes on your posts), and combined karma. Some subs also use community karma (karma earned within that specific sub). Award/awardee karma no longer exists as a separate type (discontinued 2023).
Karma is NOT 1:1 with upvotes — Reddit “fuzzes” vote counts to confuse vote-manipulation bots. Nobody outside Reddit knows the exact formula.
The automatic +1 upvote on your own posts/comments is cosmetic only — it earns you nothing and you should ignore it (don’t remove it either).
Comment karma is easier and safer to build than post karma for new accounts. Many subs require comment karma before you can even post. The wiki’s own guide says: build at least ~50 comment karma before attempting your own posts.
Downvotes are the only way to lose karma. Comment karma is visually capped at -100 (your real score can be lower); post karma can’t go below 0.
Negative karma is a trap. It locks you out of more subs (anti-troll restrictions), which makes recovery harder. Avoid it at all costs in the first weeks.

The New Gate: Contributor Quality Score (CQS) & “Established” Status

CQS — a score based on verified email/phone, history of good contributions, and past enforcement actions. Check yours at r/WhatIsMyCQS. Raise it by: verifying email + 2FA, contributing genuinely, never getting removals/bans.
“Established” (per the wiki) = earning karma + having an older account + moderate-or-higher CQS + verified email. Chat/messaging restrictions are CQS-based.
Verification types: email (raises CQS, some subs require it), community self-verification (adult/minority subs — mods organize it, only share what’s required), age assurance (legal), and human verification (if Reddit detects automated activity — a warning sign to slow down).
Karma doesn’t decay. Take weeks off and your karma stays (barring new votes).

The Core Strategy (Still Proven)

“I went from 0 to ~400 karma in my first three weeks doing this for 20-30 minutes a day.” — r/NewToReddit top contributor

Sort by “Rising” or “New”, not “Hot”. Fresh posts (1-3 hours old) haven’t blown up yet, so early thoughtful comments ride the wave. The current wiki explicitly recommends: “Sort content by ‘new’ so you’re interacting with fresh content, especially when participating in larger subreddits.”

Karma Requirements You’re Working Toward

Reddit doesn’t publish sub requirements (and the NUFS list mods explicitly ask that specific numbers never be disclosed). Community consensus and observed gates:

New in 2025-2026: Reddit added a Post Check / Poster Eligibility Guide — when you go to post in a sub that would remove your content for unmet requirements, Reddit may now tell you you don’t meet them (instead of silently removing). If you only get filtered (not told), your post is waiting in the mod queue — check on desktop, be patient, it may be approved.

HARD NO LIST — Never Do These

Never visit “free karma” subreddits (r/FreeKarma4U, etc.) — the current NUFS list has an explicit warning: “Avoid subs offering free karma. These are so associated with bad faith users that you could be banned from other subs just for using them.” Major subs auto-ban anyone who has posted there.
Never copy-paste the same comment across multiple threads — triggers spam filters instantly.
Never post the same link in multiple subreddits quickly — classic shadowban trigger.
Never ask for upvotes (“upvote if you agree!”, “show some love”, “why isn’t this getting attention?”) — vote manipulation, per both Reddiquette and site-wide rules. Reddit’s Disrupting Communities policy covers hinting at votes too.
Never post/comment 50+ times in an hour — bots flag it as non-human. The NUFS list warns: “Please be careful not to spam or post too frequently on these subs; we don’t want them to think you’re a spammer.”
Never engage in controversial topics or arguments while karma is low — the wiki’s avoid-downvotes page: “avoid potentially controversial or sensitive topics just while your karma is low.” One downvoted chain can put you in negative and restrict you further.
Never promote GrowReach before 500+ karma and a healthy 2-3 week history — spam policy (updated May 2026) explicitly covers “repeatedly posting or sharing old content for the purpose of rapidly gaining karma” and “using tools (e.g., bots, generative AI tools) that may facilitate the proliferation of spam.” Follow the 9:1 ratio from Reddiquette: max 1 in 10 of your contributions may be your own content.
Never buy Reddit accounts — account-selling accounts are the end product of karma farms; bought accounts get suspended, and ban evasion is a site-wide violation.
Never use another account to evade a ban or suspension — explicit violation of the user agreement.
Never pay anyone who claims they can “fix” a suspended/shadowbanned account — only Reddit admins can; anyone offering is a scammer (official wiki warning).

Days 1–2: Ultra-Slow Start (Shadowban & Filter Prevention)

Reddit’s new-account protections (filters, CQS checks) are most aggressive in the first days. Go deliberately slowly.

Comment Quality Formula (Use Every Time)

Structure every comment with 3 parts:

One concrete observation about the post
One actionable insight or personal experience (“I tried this and it worked because…”)
One genuine follow-up question to keep the conversation alive (but check the sub — some ICP subs punish question-ending comments; see the GrowReach ICP analysis for per-sub rules)

Write like you’re texting a friend — lowercase is fine, “tbh” and “imo” are signals you’re human. Avoid anything that reads like a LinkedIn post or AI response. Reddit loves puns and pop-culture references (official guide advice). Be sparing with emojis — some subs hate them.

Days 3–7: Ramp Up (10–15 Comments/Day)

Daily Routine (30–45 minutes)

Open Reddit, go to each of your chosen subs from the NUFS list
Sort by “Rising” or “New”
Look for posts with 50–200 upvotes posted within the last 2 hours (or any fresh post in smaller subs)
Leave 2–3 comments per subreddit
Reply to anyone who responds to your comments (builds conversation karma)
Spread across 3–5 different subreddits per day — don’t concentrate all activity in one place
Never post or comment too frequently on any single NUFS sub — these subs volunteered to be newbie-friendly; abusing them gets them (and you) in trouble

These subs have decided NOT to use karma/account-age restrictions, or only use low ones. The mods ask that this list only be shared via link (https://www.reddit.com/r/NewToReddit/wiki/index/newusersubs) — so here we summarize categories and note the annotations each sub carries, not exact thresholds (they don’t disclose those either).

Important caveats from the list itself:

Some of these subs still filter content for review — your post may not appear immediately; it’s sitting in the mod queue. Wait, don’t repost.
Reddit’s own site-wide filters still apply to everyone.

These subs still welcome new users with low/no karma restrictions, but they carry content warnings — sensitive, upsetting, controversial, or adult topics. The official guidance: lurk first, read the rules, and note these communities may be more likely to downvote. Downvotes as a new redditor with low karma can restrict which subs you can participate in even further, especially if you go into negative karma.

The Filter & Removal Survival Guide (New Section — 2026 Reality)

New users get content removed for four different reasons. Know which one hit you:

CrowdControl is a mod tool that filters content from users who are new, have negative community karma, or haven’t joined the community — if your comment vanishes in a sub you just found, join it and build a little positive karma there first.

Karmafarming — What It Actually Is (official wiki definition)

Karmafarming = posting with the main intention of getting karma (vs. contributing well). It’s often rule-breaking or disingenuous (stolen content, lies, spammy low-effort posts). People farm for 3 reasons: (1) they need karma for restrictions, (2) nefarious purposes (trolling/spamming), (3) gamification. Karmafarm subs are communities that promise/encourage upvotes — they’re associated with bad-faith users, using them can get you banned from other subs, and their spammy behavior can trigger spam filters. The wiki’s advice: earn karma genuinely — the whole point of the NUFS list is to give you safe places to do exactly that.

Downvote-Bombing (what to do if it happens)

One user has little effect — they only have one vote per post/comment, and votes-to-karma isn’t 1:1.
Organized voting, botting, or multi-account voting is vote manipulation — Reddit has detection; report it via the report button.
Organic downvotes all count — be careful what/where you post while karma is low; users pile on content already attracting downvotes.

CQS (Contributor Quality Score) — the hidden gatekeeper

Deliberately mysterious — Reddit won’t publish the formula. Known signals: verified email/phone, history of good contributions, past enforcement actions on your accounts.
5 tiers: Highest / High / Moderate / Low / Lowest. Scores update regularly; you can move up or down.
Test yours at r/WhatIsMyCQS.
How it’s used: mods can set AutoMod rules on contributor_quality (e.g. filter comments from users with CQS < moderate). The Reputation filter is informed by CQS — mods can only turn it on, they can’t tune it further.
Chat limits are CQS-based — “established account” for chat/following ≈ good CQS. New users can’t initiate chats/follows for ~1 week.
To raise CQS: verify email, avoid removals/bans (read community rules), earn karma, and note VPN on/off can matter (“network and location signals”).
Reputation filter thresholds: High filtering = more content filtered (lower-risk content); Moderate = less filtered (higher-risk only). Approved users are exempt.

Karma mechanics — the fine print

Not 1:1 with votes. The karma formula is unreleased and complex. Your own auto-upvote doesn’t count.
Vote fuzzing — Reddit slightly changes displayed vote counts on refresh to confuse bots. Don’t trust exact numbers.
-100 visual floor on comment karma — it can go lower invisibly, and even after many upvotes it may still show -100. Post karma can’t go below 0.
Auto-upvote: every post/comment you make gets 1 automatic upvote from you. It doesn’t earn karma. Don’t remove it — users interpret a missing auto-upvote as “someone already disliked this.”
Award karma is dead — the old award-karma category is gone; it’s ignored by karma filters and irrelevant to new accounts.
Community karma — karma earned within a specific sub; often used as a posting restriction to force you to comment first. View per-sub breakdown via old.reddit.com/user/me → “Show karma breakdown by subreddit.”
Realistic goal: 100 combined karma opens most of Reddit. Chasing “all of Reddit” is a trap — some subs have extreme requirements you’ll never need.

Dogpiling — the downvote death spiral

A comment that goes negative attracts more downvotes — people read it in the most negative light.
You can’t “turn it around” with edits or follow-up comments — that usually attracts MORE downvotes.
If you care about the downvotes: delete the post/comment. It won’t restore lost karma but stops the bleeding. Take a break from that sub.
Complaining about downvotes is a self-fulfilling prophecy — it reads as complaining and attracts more downvotes.

Ban appeal playbook (from a mod who processes them)

Take a break first — don’t appeal immediately; let yourself AND the mods cool off.
Work out what went wrong — read all removal/ban messages, read the sub rules, and find the interpretation that makes sense in the context of your ban (not the one you think is “most correct”).
In the message: recognize you broke a rule → apologize → indicate you won’t break it going forward. Priority is a successful appeal, not “being right.”
Be polite — your message is visible to ALL mods. Most modmail is combative; being the polite one stands out. Don’t be a “rules lawyer” or “sealion” — those get ignored and muted.
Reply to the ban message or use mod mail — never DM individual mods (taken negatively).
Be patient — mods are volunteers; it can take days.

Multiple accounts — legal, with hard limits

Multiple accounts are allowed, even with the same email. People theme accounts (casual/professional/NSFW).
Each account stands alone — its own age, karma, CQS.
NEVER: vote on the same content from multiple accounts (vote manipulation → all accounts suspended), or use an alt in a sub you’re banned from on another account (ban evasion → all accounts suspended).
Use Community Mute to keep one account from seeing a sub another account is banned from.

Shadowban avoidance (observed behaviors, from a mod)

New accounts are under stricter scrutiny than established ones.
Triggers: many identical posts/comments (especially off-topic), lots of off-site links (especially the same business link), initiating many chats/DMs (especially refused/blocked ones), vote manipulation, ban evasion, nuisance reporting, receiving lots of removals.
Mods cannot shadowban you — only Reddit admins can. Mods can only remove content from their own subs.
If shadowbanned, creating another account will likely get it shadowbanned too (ban evasion).

Comment count vs visible comments — why numbers lie

The comment count under a post is often higher than visible comments. Causes: removed by Reddit’s sitewide filters, removed by AutoMod, removed manually by mods, deleted by users.
Same for notifications — you’ll get notified but not see the comment.

The “Rule of 4” (meme subs only)

In joke/meme subs, when there’s a string of similar comments, the 4th one gets downvoted (e.g. “Cat” +76, “Cat” +54, “Cat” +34, “Cat” -45, “Cat” +12). Rarely matters in normal conversation.

Reddit Premium does NOT bypass restrictions

Paying for Premium still leaves you subject to karma/account-age/CQS filters. Premium features: ad-free, comment highlighting, “higher rate limits” (mostly for new accounts avoiding the “doing that a lot” popup), avatar options, r/lounge access.

Profile curation & privacy

New “Curate your profile” controls: keep all public, curate selectively, or hide everything.
Mods can see all your activity in their sub for 28 days after you interact — overrides curation. After that it reverts.
Curation makes it more difficult (not impossible) to see your history. Deleting posts/comments after conversations run their course is a real strategy.
Anonymity: Reddit won’t publish your signup details, but your profile aggregates everything you post — gender, location, age can be pieced together. Don’t view Reddit and LinkedIn simultaneously (LinkedIn has been used to dox Redditors). Use separate emails/passwords.

Emojis — the 2026 reality

No rule bans emojis, but traditionally Reddit dislikes them. In 2026 the view has softened — many subs are flooded with them. Observe the sub first.
AI models love excessive emojis — heavy emoji use can trigger accusations of using AI. Use sparingly as a baseline.
Emoticons (:) :D) are always safe.

Sorting methods — what each actually does

Hot — default; upvotes+comments weighted by recency; mostly last 24h.
Best — like Hot, weaker recency bias; mostly last week.
Rising — very strong recency bias; popular posts in the last hour. Best for early commenting.
Top — most upvoted of a period; good for binging a new sub.
New — ignores karma entirely; newest first. Best for finding early-comment opportunities.

Usually a formatting problem: title/body character counts, required [category] in title, post flair, user flair, etc. Karma/age restrictions only kick in AFTER you submit.

Default view (Best/Hot) shows outliers. To see what an average post gets: sort by New, scroll to posts a few hours old, look at typical comment/vote counts — often small or zero.

Finding karma filter levels

Sometimes listed in rules/About/FAQ/wiki; sometimes AutoMod drops a removal comment; sometimes Post & Comment Guidance interrupts you; sometimes pure trial-and-error. Retry at karma chunks: 25/50/100/200/300; age chunks: 3/7/20/30 days.

Reddit Cares messages

Anonymous “get them help and support” messages — legitimately for users who seem to be struggling, but sometimes used as harassment. You can disable: overflow menu (three dots) on the message → “turn off notifications from this admin.”

Monetize a successful account via Reddit gold from awards. Need 1000+ gold worth of awards (awards are 15-50 gold each → 20-77 awards). Not for new accounts — establish a few hundred karma first.

Phishing links — fake Reddit login pages that steal credentials. If asked to log in from a link, go to the app/site directly.
DM/chat spam — porn-based scams, “free” offers. Check the requester’s posting history; use the Refuse button.
Reddit is NOT a marketplace — no protections for transactions.

What is Ban Evasion?

Ban evasion = being banned from a community, then using an alternative Reddit account to continue participating in that community. It also covers creating/repurposing a community to serve the same objective as a previously banned community (admins handle that one directly — no mod report needed).

Key rules:

Both are violations of the Reddit Rules and can result in a sitewide suspension (not just a sub ban — your entire account is gone)
It’s up to community mods to decide who participates — even if you disagree with the ban reason, don’t evade it
Some mods are OK with a redditor returning on another account if they participate in good faith — but Reddit only reviews ban evasion reports when reported by the community moderators (not by random users)
AutoModerator shadow bans do not count as community bans for evasion purposes
